According to the patent filed with the US Patent Office, the headphones will have the ability to dock rechargeable battery packs, storage, Bluetooth or WiFi reception modules and media players, as well have buttons to control the volume.

“The accessories can range from a personal media player that can render audio, such as MP3 (Moving Pictures Expert Group, MPEG-1, audio layer 3) content, to rechargeable battery packs, storage devices, and modules that can support wireless communication between the headphones and other devices such as media centers, game consoles, and personal computers (“PCs”). A user can pick an accessory and snap it into the receiving space of the headphones. When so installed, the accessory becomes physically and functionally embedded so that its functionality becomes seamlessly integrated with operation of the headphones,” an extract from the filing said. If Microsoft is indeed planning a new Zune HD for the holiday shopping season then they sure better hope it is better than the newly announced iPod Touch refresh which of course has made a huge splash in the news the past few days. If Zune ever hopes to sell a single new media player they better have made some advances in hardware and software to sway a public already enamored with anything Apple.

The new Zune HD 2 should have superior hardware configuration with a game ready processor and advanced multimedia capabilities if they are going to even come close this season. Few shoppers are going to risk a Zune when money is so tight and the features are going to have to be heads above Apple to convince brand aware consumers who easily recognize the worlds most popular media players.

It’s going to take more than hard drive space and cool colors to attract buyers for the new Zune and Microsoft should be prepared for a brutal shopping season this year.

Rumor has it that Microsoft is about to refresh the Zune HD line of media players with a new HD Zune being lined up for Holidays 2010. I say yeah for that but I sure hope they offer more than just a few new software tweaks and little more.

I am hoping for at least a nice camera on the new Zune HD and quite a lot more in the way of apps and accessories for my lifestyle. Anyone here considering a new mp3 player or do you just use a mobile phone device now?

Two new apps for Zune HD

Microsoft has two new apps for the Zune HD in a promising sign they are still offering updates for the much maligned mp3 player from Microsoft. Available now are the Microsoft Money App and a new game called Animalgrams which seems geared to very young kids. I’m unsure how many of those are using a Zune HD but maybe a few of us want to let the kids play with our latest gadget.

I’m not a user of Microsoft money so i will have to default to a review from other Zune users but suffice it to say it helps manage your money using your Microsoft device and software.

Two new Zune HD apps: MSN Money, and Animalgrams –

Even though the Zune HD app upgrade path to Windows Phone 7 is a dead end, it’s nice to see a couple of new apps appear ready for download to Zune HDs this week.

The first, following in the footsteps of MSN Weather, is MSN Money. Our friend Travis at has a nice review of the new app, which features stocks information, a Currencies page including a Currency converter, Watchlists, and Articles:

Zune tablet on the way?

Is there a Zune tablet on the way? No! Microsoft is making some noise over their plans for a tablet computer which was mentioned as an urgency by Steve (Looking for a new job yet?) Ballmer but there is no Microsoft tablet in the future. If anything they will allow soe hardware vendor to cram Windows 7 into tablet hardware but the idea of a Microsoft zune tablet are way ahead of the game.

I would love to see Microsot make a Zune music tablet but i doubt we’ll ever even see a new Zune device. How sad is is that they spent billions to make the Zune and now we are stuck with basically the Zune HD as the only player they offer. Is Zune dead? No not yet but the signs of life are weak. lets hope in their bid to reorganize after the KIN phones mistake they will pump more into the Zune and we might even see a Zune tablet coming Zune.

Analyst’s View: Microsoft’s Tablet is Coming! Well, Not Really | Tim Gideon |

Here’s a secret: in the world of online media, sometimes writers (like me) need to stretch a few sentences into a story, even if, well, there isn’t much of a story. Like it or not, it’s our job. Here are the Ballmer quotes from yesterday’s Microsoft financial analysts meeting that we, the media, are basing the hype and promise of a Microsoft tablet on:

“They’ll be shipping as soon as they are ready. And it is job one urgency. No one is sleeping at the switch.”

Sounds promising! In fact, it sounds like a promise. So, Microsoft is finally making a tablet – will it be a Zune-family piece of hardware? Not so fast.

“Just like we had to make things happen on netbooks, we’ve got to make things happen with Windows 7 on slates. And we are in the process of doing that as we speak. We’re working with our hardware partners, we’re tuning Windows 7 to new slate hardware designs that they’re bringing them to market.”

Hmm. So Microsoft is basically just shipping Windows 7 and having “hardware partners” make the tablet. Not only will this device not be a Zune, but it seems like there will be several iterations. This sounds an awful lot like the way Microsoft develops operating systems for PCs and then lets hardware vendors build the machines. In other words, it’s business as usual.
